Hello again and hope all is well. Here in the southern hemisphere, autumn turns to thoughts of frost and snow in the mountains. Nice to have the fireplace glowing.
While reseaching the internet yesterday, this draft in progress accidentaly went out to many people on my mailing list. Sorry for the glitch. Since then I have added about 10 more article links.
I am still not able to add background color to my mailings as I was with yahoo stationary. If anyone has a suggestion for a free or relatively inexpensive service that would give me over 2000 mailings a day capacity and that I could add color to the background stationary of the compose mode, please let me know.
Also I am seeing that much of the mail that I am sending through my gmail account is getting delivered to the sspam and bulk files. If you can add this email that I am maling from gsrain@gmail.com  into your contacts/address book, I think it would be getting delivered to your inbox.
Thanks
George

By Robert Scheer
Are we Americans truly savages or merely tone-deaf in matters of morality, and therefore more guilty of terminal indifference than venality? It's a question demanding an answer in response to the publication of the detailed 370-page report on U.S. complicity in torture, issued last week by the Justice Department's inspector general.

QUOTES:

"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." Robert F. Kennedy -US Attorney General 1961-64, assassinated in Los Angeles while campaigning

"Individualism, as a definition of holding to personal ideals, is classed as obstinacy and anti-social. Inevitably we run point blank into the evils of compromise. When compromise enters our moral fibre, it spreads like a cancerous growth. We think we plan adequate safeguards around areas in which we contemplate yielding our standards, but once we lower the fence and break our strong will to do right, come what may, we expose ourselves to forces that spread beyond control. Compromise always starts on some rather insignificant principle. The dangers of yielding seem negligible and we usually risk those things first where observation and detection by others is difficult. We thus seek to avoid censure and discipline. In a short time we find ourselves trading our principles for false values and doing it in the black market of human relationships..."  Ralph W. Hardy

"I am done with great things and big things, great institutions and big success, and I am for those tiny invisible molecular moral forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, yet which if you give them time, will rend the hardest monuments of man's pride": William James

"My kind of loyalty was to one's country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death": Mark Twain

Instead of retiring $1 trillion in debt, the Administration's policies will increase the debt by $4 trillion by the time the President steps down..

 PUNMASTER MUSIC ARTICLES:

STEVE CROPPER (BOOKER T & THE MGs) AND FELIX CAVALIERE (RASCALS) UNITE
ON FORTHCOMING ALBUM NUDGE IT UP A NOTCH, DUE OUT ON STAX RECORDS ON
JULY 29

Joined on Nashville sessions with bassist Shake Anderson and drummer
Chester Thompson, with co-producer Jon Tiven

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ‹ What would happen if you combined Steve Cropper, the
Memphis-weaned Stax guitar powerhouse who also wrote and co-wrote many
soul classics, with Felix Cavaliere, the singer, songwriter and
keyboardist whose soulful voice and songs helped form the Rascals? The
world is about to find out when Stax Records releases Steve Cropper and
Felix Cavaliereıs Nudge It Up a Notch on July 29, 2008.

This soul summit came about as a result of conversations between
Cropper
and producer/songwriter Jon Tiven. When Tiven moved to Nashville
several
years ago, he asked Cropper what he was up to. Cropper replied that he
was focusing on live dates with Booker T & the MGs and the Blues
Brothers, but harbored the desire to record some new music. But who
would sing? The answer, it turned out, was Cavaliere, who, like Cropper
and Tiven, now lived in Nashville. In fact Cropper and Cavaliere were
no
strangers: they had, with a few other well-known musicians, put
together
a band to play special events. The two hadnıt written together before,
but agreed it would be fun to try.

The writing process began at Tivenıs Hormone Studios, followed by the
recording of two songs, ³One of Those Days² (the albumıs lead track)
and
³Love Appetite.² Drummer Chester Thompson, a veteran of John Fogerty,
Frank Zappa, Genesis and Frank Black, signed on as drummer, and
suggested a bass player, his friend Shake Anderson, who was Curtis
Mayfieldıs protégé. The assemblage grew to include two backup singers,
Mark Williams and Nınandi Bryant. And that was it. No special guest
stars. As Tiven wrote in the notes, ³This isnıt one of those albums
where you have to guess whoıs doing what ‹ every guitar lick is Steve,
every keyboard is Felix, and all the songs are originals.²

Tiven elaborates on the legacies of Cropper and Cavaliere: ³Steve
Cropper is a guitar playerıs guitarist but also a songwriterıs
songwriter,² he writes. ³If the only thing he did in life was to play
producer/co-writer/guitarist for Otis Redding, that would be enough.
But
he also helmed enough albums that made their mark on American pop
culture by artists like Booker T & the MGs, The Blues Brothers, Jeff
Beck and John Mellencamp to qualify him as a bona fide national
treasure.²

³And Cavaliere . . .,² he adds, ³If you were alive in the alive in the
mid-to-late Œ60s, you couldnıt go anywhere without hearing his voice
and
songs are part of his group The Young Rascals (later The Rascals).
Their
blue-eyed soul dominated the airwaves . . . and gave this country the
kind of soul music most folks wouldnıt think to associate with a bunch
of Long Island Peppermint Lounge expatriates.²

Nudge It Up a Notch, which was reverently mixed by the legendary David
Z, features 12 tracks, including several instrumentals (Cropper having
a
bit of history in the R&B instrumental department) alongside vocal
tracks. On a few tunes the team turned to friends Henry Gross and Tom
Hambridge to provide their lyrical spin. One track, ³Make The Time Go
Faster,² embellishes its chunky soul riff with rap passages.

³If all this combination of iconic songwriter/prformers had to offer
was simply the sum of their parts it would be extraordinary,² Tiven
concludes. ³But you put this much flammable material in the room and
you
donıt just get a little heat. You get a bonfire.²

CSNY Documentary Heading To U.S. Theaters

Gregg Goldstein, The Hollywood Reporter

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are finalizing a deal for U.S.
rights
to the politically charged Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young documentary
"CSNY -- Deja Vu."

Fortissimo Films, which acquired the film from Shangri-La, has sold
rights to 15 more international territories.

The feature, directed by Neil Young, chronicles the rock group's 2006
Freedom of Speech tour in support of Young's "Living in War" album.

The anti-Iraq War theme and songs like "Let's Impeach the President"
increasingly polarized audiences as the band traveled through the U.S.
Interviews with soldiers and others affected by the war are intercut
with the concert footage.

When the film premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival, the
band members expressed a desire to release it before the November
elections in order to encourage debate. The proposed deal would
certainly get it seen.

In July, Roadside will release it theatrically in 15 cities, with
Lionsgate handling a simultaneous nationwide video-on-demand release
and, via potential partner Netflix, streaming video. The DVD will be
released shortly before the elections through the band's label,
Reprise,
with HDNet in talks to air the film on the same date.

Fortissimo already has sold the film to Australia, Europe, Israel,
Japan
and Latin America.............. Cinetic is handling North American sales.

MICKEY HART GETS TO WORK AND PLAY A musician gets to play for a living.
Yet even though their work is called play, it still work.  Grateful
Dead
Drummer Mickey Hart described what play and work are like for him.

(Actuality #2) ³Thatıs why they call what I do play, see I donıt go to
work, thatıs a boon unto itself, I wouldnıt go to work every day either
if I didnıt have to......... But it is a bit of work, it isnıt all play, a lot
of itıs detail, but it borders on play.²

Mickey will be working and playing tonight Wavy Gravyıs Birthday
Celebration in Mill Valley, California.

THE TURTLES SUE OVER ICE CUBE Two members of the The Turtles, the Œ60s
group who had a hit with ³Happy Together,² have sued Capitol Records
over an Ice Cube song. According to the suit that was filed yesterday
in
L-A court, Flo & Eddie recorded a song in 1972 for The Turtles called
³Buzzsaw.² According to TMZ, the suit claims the tune was sampled in a
rap song by Ice Cube called ³Jackinı for Beats.² Flo & Eddie allege
Capital signed a deal for Cube to use the song but ended up going
beyond
the agreement to make even more money off their work. The songwriters
are seeking a minimum of 25-thousand dollars but not more than
70-thousand dollars.
SINATRA DOCUMENTARY CONSIDERED Frank Sinatraıs children, Nancy, Tina
and
Frank Jr., are at odds over a proposal to produce a film documentary
about their late fatherıs life. The World Entertainment News Network
reports the film would be directed by Martin Scorsese, who has been at
the helm of movies about Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Tina
supports
the project but Nancy is concerned the documentary would only focus on
the ³negative and ugly moments.² Frank Jr. complains heıs been kept out
of the loop by his sisters and wishes for more involvement regarding

NICK MASON CANıT BELIEVE THOSE PRICES A lot has certainly changes since
Pink Floyd first hit the scene in the mid-1960ıs. Nick Mason told us
about one of the things that he finds hard to believe now that weıve
entered the 21st Century.

(Actuality #1)  ³If you are touring now, itıs extraordinary because,
when I was a boy, it was unthinkable for a ticket price to be greater
than the price of an album, now itıs a different world.²

What is still about the price of an album is a DVD, and thereıs a new
disc out there for Pink Floyd fans. Itıs called Welcome to the Machine,
and itıs the 40th anniversary special edition of the ultimate critical
guide to the work of Pink Floyd in concert on record and on film. The
package is out today.

JETHRO TULL CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY

The 40th Anniversary of Jethro Tull is upon us this year--2008.   The
group, which is made up of frontman/flutist/guitarist Ian Anderson,
guitarist Martin Barre, drummer Doane Perry, keyboardist John O'Hara,
and bassist David Goodier is in the midst of a variety of tourdates
that
include Europe, the UK, the Middle East and North America.....

Anderson says the group will choose its set list, "to a large extent
from the first few albums but with a some representative songs from the
'80s and the '90s, too. Songs and tunes which defined the early Jethro
Tull from blues band to eclectic, pre-prog inventiveness."

But he says that this year he plans "to visit a few less places than
last year. I already have some time set aside for studio work and
lazing
about in the garden."

The 90 shows between April and December, with which will include eleven
in the United States, will be updated on the band's web site,
www.jethrotull.com.

While there are no new recordings available in 2008, there are a few
historical releases scheduled over the next months, including a live
DVD
collection of perfomances in Germany, a newly produced DVD documentary
and history of Jethro Tull, which Anderson says will feature the
contributions of most past band members, friends and associates as well
as live performances from a multitude of sources over the years.
Contributions include reference information from many fans and liner
notes from the group's original basssist Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond. The
artwork features a painting by Jeffrey depicting Blackpool, the town
where Anderson, Hammond, drummer Barriemore Barlow and keyboard-player
John Evan, formed a band in 1964.

On June 10, Capitol/EMI Records is re-releasing the group's first
album,
THIS WAS as a 2-CD and digital release of a remastered and expanded
Collectors' Edition of the Tull's 1968 debut album, This Was. This
release presents, for the first time on CD, the albumıs original mono
mix as well as a new stereo mix of the album. Also featured are nine
related 1968 recordings for John Peelıs BBC Radio program, Top Gear,
plus four rare 1968 UK singles: Sunshine Day, Song For John Gee, Love
Story and A Christmas Song. The commemorative package includes 35
tracks
in all, as well as package notes and anecdotes from Jethro Tullıs
members.

On May 20, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Jethro Tullıs Jack In
The Green:   Live In Germany, an enticing DVD compendium of in-concert
rarities [running time:   96 minutes] spanning the years 1970 to 1993.

Jethro Tull have carved out a musical niche all their own with a career
that has spanned over three decades. Selling over sixty million albums
including Aqualung, Thick As a Brick and Stand Up; albums which have
offered up Classic Rock radio staples Locomotive Breath and Aqualung.
The band has played over 2500 concerts around the world and helped
define a unique blend of acoustic and electric music that draws
influences from the world's music, including Asian, Jazz, Classical and
Folk.

As live performers, Jethro Tull are unparalleled. Famous for
instrumental virtuosity and theatrical flair, Jethro Tull live is an
event that welcomes longtime fans and new converts alike..

Last night Phil Lesh & Friends opened a five-night run at San
Franciscoıs famed Warfield Theater. To the surprise of nearly everyone
in attendance, Lesh and his friends ran through a complete version of
the Grateful Deadıs 1967 self-titled debut during their first set, with
Bob Weir joining his estranged bandmate for ³Cream Puff War,² ²Morning
Dew,² ³New Minglewood Blues² and ³Viola Lee Blues.² Weir returned at
